Laminate is one of the most forgiving floors you can install, with one big condition. It has to be given time to adjust to the room it will live in before it goes down. In a climate as dry as ours, that step is not a suggestion from the manufacturer, it is the difference between a floor that stays tight and one that fails.
Our combination of single digit humidity in the dry months and humid monsoon weeks puts real stress on flooring. Acclimation is how you get ahead of that movement instead of chasing it later.
Why Desert Humidity Is the Real Variable
Laminate is built on a high density fiberboard core that responds to the moisture in the air around it. In humid conditions it takes on a little moisture and expands slightly. In our typical fifteen to twenty five percent humidity it gives that moisture up and contracts. The floor is always quietly breathing with the seasons.
The danger is installing planks that are out of sync with the home. Lay laminate that is too dry and it will swell once monsoon humidity arrives, peaking and buckling. Lay it during a humid stretch with no acclimation and it will shrink as the dry season returns, opening gaps between the planks. Acclimation lets the material settle to your home's real conditions first.
How to Acclimate the Right Way
Bring the flooring into the actual room where it will be installed, not the garage and not a covered patio, and let it sit for at least forty eight to seventy two hours. Check your specific product, since some manufacturers ask for longer or have rules about whether the boxes stay sealed, are opened, or are cross stacked to let air move around every plank.
The room conditions during acclimation matter as much as the time. Keep the space at normal living temperature and humidity with the HVAC running the way it will once you are living there. A few simple habits make the difference:
Store the boxes flat, never stood on end or leaned against a wall
Keep the planks away from exterior walls, windows, and direct sun while they adjust
Maintain the same conditions before, during, and after installation, not just on install day
Acclimating in a closed up, climate off house and then turning on the AC afterward defeats the entire purpose.
Do Not Forget the Slab Underneath
Most Tucson homes sit on a concrete slab, and that slab can release moisture upward long after it looks and feels dry. Before installation, the slab should be tested for moisture, and a vapor barrier or a vapor blocking underlayment belongs between the slab and the laminate. Without it, ground moisture migrates into the underside of the floor and undoes all your careful acclimation.
This is especially important in homes that get shut up during the hottest months, including snowbird and seasonal properties. A house sealed with the cooling off bakes the slab and the floor through summer, then swings hard when the owners return and turn everything back on. A proper vapor barrier and a stable expansion gap give the floor room to handle those swings.
Leave Room for Movement
Even a perfectly acclimated floor still moves a little with the seasons, so it must be installed as a true floating floor with a continuous expansion gap around the entire perimeter. That quarter to three eighths inch gap, hidden under baseboard or quarter round, is what allows the floor to expand during monsoon without lifting in the field.
Long open runs need planned expansion breaks at doorways once the floor exceeds the manufacturer's maximum continuous length. Respecting both the perimeter gap and those interior breaks is the final piece that keeps a desert laminate floor flat, tight, and quiet for the long haul.
Acclimation, slab moisture control, and a correctly installed expansion gap are not glamorous, but together they are what make a laminate floor last in our climate.
